Your product images are the first thing a buyer sees — in search results before they click, and on your listing page before they read a word. Studies consistently show that images are the primary driver of whether a buyer adds to cart or exits. Amazon enforces specific image requirements, and failing to meet them results in listing suppression. This guide covers every rule, the technical specs, and — more importantly — how to use your image stack strategically to lift conversion rate.

Images drive conversion more than any other listing element

In split tests run on Amazon listings, improving the image stack (adding lifestyle images, infographics, and a size chart) consistently lifts conversion rate by 15–40% — a larger impact than title changes or bullet point rewrites. Your image budget is marketing budget.

Main Image Rules (MAIN)

The main image — the one that appears in search results and as the default image on your listing — has the strictest requirements. Breaking these rules leads to listing suppression or removal from search:

✓ Main image MUST:

  • Show the actual product being sold (not packaging only, unless the listing is for packaging)
  • Have a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255)
  • Fill at least 85% of the image frame
  • Be a professional photograph (no hand-drawn illustrations)
  • Show the entire product — no cropping of edges

✗ Main image CANNOT include:

  • Text overlays, badges, or graphics (“Best Seller”, “New”, price tags)
  • Watermarks or brand logos on the image itself
  • Borders or coloured backgrounds
  • Lifestyle photos as the main image (for most categories)
  • Multiple products if only one is being sold
  • Accessories not included in the sale
Listing suppression from bad main images

Amazon automatically suppresses listings whose main image does not meet requirements — your listing disappears from search without any notification. Check Manage Inventory → Suppressed to see if any of your listings are affected. The most common causes: coloured backgrounds, text overlays, and product filling less than 85% of the frame.

Secondary Images: Your 8-Slot Strategy

The 8 secondary image slots are your most underutilised conversion asset. Most sellers upload 2–3 product shots and stop. Best-performing listings use all 8 slots strategically:

2

Multiple Angles

Front, back, side, bottom. Show the whole product from every angle a buyer would want.

3

Lifestyle / In Use

Show the product in its natural environment with a model or in a home setting. Triggers emotional buying.

4

Key Features Callout

Infographic with arrows and short text highlighting the 3–5 most important product features.

5

Size / Scale Reference

Show the product next to a recognisable object or against a ruler. Reduces returns from wrong-size expectations.

6

What’s in the Box

All included accessories, parts, and packaging laid out flat. Eliminates a major purchase objection.

7

Close-Up / Detail

Zoom in on material texture, stitching quality, connector types — whatever your buyer inspects most.

8

Comparison Chart

Your product vs. the alternative (generic/competitors), or your product line variants. Drives upsell and parent-child consideration.

9

Social Proof / Results

Before/after if relevant, review quotes rendered as a graphic, or certification badges.

Image Quality That Drives Conversion

Compliance gets your listing live. Quality gets it converting. The difference between a listing with 4% conversion rate and one with 12% conversion rate often comes down to image quality, not price.
